I love the library! Right at this moment, we have 20+ books/DVD's sitting on our bookshelf from the library. Here are my favorite things about our local library, which are common among many library systems:
Mango Language Learning: Through our library website, I can log onto Mango for free and explore and learn many different languages. I perused some of the German lessons today! I understand that Mango is accessed through many many library systems in the US.
Library Purchase Request: Each month I can submit 3 suggestions for my local library to purchase for their collection. If my request is accepted, I will be the first to check out the book. Our local library has purchased many of my suggestions and I am the first person to read the fresh copy of the book! I never buy books for our home anymore (with the exception of children's books). I have the library purchase all the books I want!
Inter Library Loan: If the library does not purchase a book, they will search for it among a nation-wide database and receive the book for me on loan from another library. This has allowed me to get just about any book I could ever want!
Summer Reading Program: Audrey did 8 reading/learning activities with me and earned a free baby board book for her reward. From the age of 18 months and up, the kids can read 5 hours and do 4 reading/learning activities to earn a bunch of rewards at local businesses, like free ice cream, zoo passes, etc. The kids are always excited about this program and many many library systems do something similar.
Museum Passes: Our library has family passes to checkout to a local kid's science museum. It is always so much fun to go there! Check with your library to see if there are any passes to check out at local attractions in your area!
DVD's: We can checkout DVD's for free at our library and the selection is phenomenal! I love that our shelves are not cluttered with DVD's of our own and we always have a rotation of new films to watch instead of the same old DVD's over and over.
